Bharathiyar was way ahead of his time. He was someone who presented us with profound poetry, in very simple language. And so, his reach was phenomenal. The concept behind the performance comes from the fact that Bharathi was a staunch proponent of women — through his work, he extensively spoke about how they are torch-bearers of society. Even at a time when common readers were deep in the shackles of patriarchy, he would drop refreshing ideas. This is a prominent reason behind his continued relevance even today. We think that this relevance should be reminded not just in India but repeatedly everywhere. 

The concept of having multiple art forms that complement each other is not new but has existed since the Sangam time. Mostly in the current day, we see dance and hear music along with it. But, there are also other aspects of our art forms. The idea is to collaborate and bring discourse, drama, dance and music together for a night by women, for women and with women.

​It's been exactly 100 years since Bharathiyar's passing but his writings, which were a reflection of the then society, speak volumes even in the present day. Bharathiyar believed that women are the torchbearers for society and it reflects in his writings. The entire performance will focus on Bharathiyar’s views on women empowerment and how it is reflected today.

We are honoured that our Government has decided to celebrate our women's multi-faceted roles across society, and we will also celebrate the men who help to debunk stereotypes, change mindsets and play an active role in supporting and uplifting women
